Michel Camilo is a very powerful Latin jazz pianist who is quite capable of playing several rhythms at once. He emulates an orchestra even when playing solo, so it is not surprising that this outing with 21 other musicians in an impressive all-star band is intense and passionate. Camilo performs ten of his originals on this date including the blues "One More Once," an atmospheric "Dreamlight," "Caribe," "Just Kidding" and his "hit" "Why Not." Among the notables heard from are tenor saxophonist Ralph Bowen altoist Paquito d'Rivera Chris Hunter on soprano and alto, and trumpeter Michael Mossman but Camilo is the main star throughout.
The catchy rhythms make the music accessible but the pianist never coasts or takes it easy, constantly challenging himself. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Jesse Cook and his flamenco guitar playing has been known in some parts of the world for a few years now, but he only seemed to make a slight breakthrough with his rendition of the Crowded House tune “Fall at Your Feet”. The song, which also featured Rembrandts singer Danny Wilde, moved more into the pop or adult contemporary mainstream, but it hasn’t prevented Cook from continually staying on the side of his infectious “world” music. And this new disc, with more collaboration, is no different. The opening “Prelude” has more in common with Middle Eastern than Latin rhythms, especially thanks to Maryem Tollar’s vocals. You can almost envision the sand being blown across a vast desert. But as it fades it moves into “Qadukka-L-Mayyas”, a percussion-driven tune that could be found in Sting’s current catalog of songs. Cook uses the percussion to offset his meticulous guitar playing on a tune that was written only 900 years ago during the Andelusian Period. Think of the Gypsy Kings raised in Cairo and you have the idea.

The contradiction is so apparent it could pass for a Zen koan - how do you pay tribute to the man who changed the course of jazz five times and stay focused? How do you render homage to the jazz master whose most effective tools were silence, the short line, a har­mon mute, the question mark hanging in the air? Because for all his prodigious talent, Miles Dewey Davis was above all a cipher, a shaman, and his bands were a channel, a conduit through which music from a higher place seemed to flow. His trumpet a juju stick, Davis orchestrated and directed the spontaneous creation of a new jazz in a succession of radically differing ensembles, each with roots in the jazz tradition and its head in the clouds of freedam and abstraction.

[cut][quote]Paco de Lucia's anthology edited by Uni/Polygram Latino consists of two volumes (one CD per volume) comprehending a varied number of themes from the different stages of the virtuoso modern flamenco guitarist and composer. Please allow me to cover both volumes in one review. Considering Paco's long career and extensive material I have to admit that the compilation was done with excellent taste and offers great value. Although the material is aimed to those listeners who probably don't own any of De Lucia's albums or just a few recordings, nevertheless, they managed to include a good selection of many of Paco's main modern compositions -in my opinion where his value is- that he still plays today during his many tours. Among them: "Solo Quiero Caminar", "Rio Ancho", "Zyryah", "Tio Sabas", "Chiquito", and "Entre Dos Aguas". In addition, the album includes some of the older and more traditional pieces as well as some from earlier recordings, and a movement from the "Concierto de Aranjuez" (live recording by Paco with orchestra). Something inside tells me that he ideal anthology that would have made justice to De Lucia would definitely have been two double CDs with more live material and collaboration efforts with Al Dimeola and John Mc Laughling. But, again this is an opportunity to own many or most of his best at a convenient price in two separate volumes. If you really are starting to listen to Paco De Lucia I recommend you start with Volume 2 as I think the material introduces better the different moods of the artist and allows you to better sense his musical evolution. If you then want more go for Vol. 1 to complete Paco's main repertoire, and/or get "Luzia" (his last release), simply because today he is playing better than ever. Paco changed the sound and the depth of Flamenco and of Spain's modern music not by playing strange noises, crazy effects, or soloing out of tune, but by adding alternatives and expanding the music scales and improvising over the rigid structure of traditional Flamenco and Spanish music. Thank you Paco for allowing the Sapnish folklore and sentiment to grow.

Paco De Lucia - Entre Dos Aguas - 1994

This is one of Paco de Lucia most poplar albums among modern Spanish guitar listeners. It's also a great place to start listening to De Lucia as the CD offers samples form both new and traditional Flamenco, plus other Spanish rhythms. Eight themes from De Lucia and six interpretations from other authors, among which we can distinguish two themes from the Spanish poet and also composer Federico Garcia Lorca. "Entre Dos Aguas" is probably De Lucia's greatest hit world-wide. The success of this composition was an unexpected surprise to De Lucia as it was the last theme to be recorded and was composed as the group improvised and played in order to fill album space. "Rio Ancho" is a well known theme from De Lucia's trio efforts with Dimeola and Mc Laughing. The version recorded in this CD is the complete original version. De Lucia's guitar playing can be easily distinguished from the rest of the group's guitarists and his soloing will stand out from most of the world's wood guitar and nylon string players. De Lucia has added a great deal to the Flamenco music style and managed to grow further into the art of improvisation which lead him to enter into a fusion of styles and rhythms. This album specifically is closer to modern or nouveaux flamenco with very few moments of fusion, however if you understand about guitar playing you will appreciate that De Lucia's solos use tonalities and scales that are adventurous and challenging to the traditional player In summary, this album is a collection of different compositions and does not bear a defined style or a one music concept like De Lucia's last CD "Luzia". Nevertheless, the material is excellent and the instrument playing and ambience is superb. Flamenco music has a unique flavour and represents a life style. De Lucia is a main representative of this art and culture.

Paco De Lucia, John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola

This is the latest in a series of recordings by three of the leading guitarists of their generation. It is a more substantial offering than the previous two, running at over 53 minutes, with 9 tracks in all. Two are written by De Lucia, with three-a-piece by McLaughlin and DiMeola. The music displays the fire and grace which we have come to expect from this trio, but there is also a sense that both the writing and playing of the trio have become a little less frantic and more focussed than on previous occasions.And, dare I say it, more melodic.

MONTEIRO, YOUNG & HOLT or M.Y.H. for short is the name of a band that brings together the best jazz from the U.S. and Asia. The group consists one of Asia's top jazz pianists, Jeremy Monteiro from Singapore and two of Chicago's swingiest jazzman, Eldee Young on double bass and Redd Holt on drums.
In 1988, the group together with O'Donel Levy and saxman John Stubblefied played a rousing early morning concert at the prestigious Montreux Jazz festival. The festival director, Claude Nobs called the concert "an unforgettable set which will remain a classic concert of the first 22 years of Montreux".
The Montreux concert and "live" album, was a high point in the musical relationship established between the trio in 1986, when they recorded Singapore's first digital jazz recording "Back to Basics" together with members of the Singapore Jazz group JERAMZEE and other American jazz musicians.

Recorded in the U.S. in a three-and-a-half day flurry of inspired activity before the band members' visas expired, DISRAELI GEARS continued to present the legendary, unprecedented rock power-trio acrobatics pioneered by Cream on their debut FRESH CREAM.
The acronymic "SWLABR (She Walked Like a Bearded Rainbow)" for instance, featured some of the band's most fiery instrumental interplay. The album, with its eye-catching day-glo cover, was produced by Felix Pappalardi (who went on to co-found the Cream-inspired Mountain) and once again featured collaborations between singer/bassist Jack Bruce and lyric poet Pete Brown. The Top Five hit "Sunshine Of Your Love," however, was written by Brown and Eric Clapton. That iconic riff-rocker, along with the slinky, bluesy "Strange Brew," and the mythographic, wah-wah stomper "Tales of Brave Ulysses" was a staple of rock radio forever after, making DISRAELI GEARS one of the seminal '60s rock albums. Despite the good humor suggested by the jokey a capella reading of "Mother's Lament," however, all was far from peace and love in the Cream camp at the time, as internal and external pressures broke up the band by the end of 1968.

Compiled from Davis' famous BIRTH OF THE COOL recording sessions, as well as three mid-1950's Blue Note sessions and the 1958 SOMETHIN' ELSE session with Cannonball Adderly, BALLADS & BLUES illustrates the fresh new sound Davis was moving on to around the time bebop was coming to an end. These songs are pulled out of context (they were originally grouped with more up-tempo bebop tunes) to illustrate their newness as well as Davis' developing artistry on his trumpet.

By the end of the 1950s, his style would come to epitomize a sophisticated kind of cool. The songs have slow tempos and wide spaces for Davis to play with, especially 1950's "Moon Dreams," which features an orchestra's worth of brass accompanying Davis, and Davis' classic "Weirdo."
